{"id":93,"date":"2013-07-08T22:17:47","date_gmt":"2013-07-08T17:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/professorontherun.wordpress.com\/?p=93"},"modified":"2015-06-12T10:06:55","modified_gmt":"2015-06-12T16:06:55","slug":"first-trail-run-flag-rock-rattlesnakes-and-dehydration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/professorontherun.com\/?p=93","title":{"rendered":"First Trail Run, Flag Rock, Rattlesnakes, and Dehydration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the evening of 8 July 2013 I went up for my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/92039761\" target=\"_blank\">first trail run<\/a>.\u00a0 \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe height=\"405\" width=\"590\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/92039761\/embed\/948f6c211d30fc9557266b97954dd6abf9508d81\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n<p>It was in the 90s, and the evening sun was beating on the exposed face of the Wasatch Range that I decided to ascend.\u00a0 I took the trail closest to home &#8211; a set straight up from Farmington to Flag Rock &#8211; an outcropping about 1,500 ft up from the valley floor with a large American Flag.\u00a0 I started &#8220;running&#8221; and quickly realized that my Nebraska lungs (and legs) weren&#8217;t prepared for the climb or lack of oxygen in the air.\u00a0 To make matters worse, about 1 mile in, I almost stepped on a rattlesnake.\u00a0 With the snake behind me, I figured I should soldier on, but was incredibly paranoid for the rest of the run.\u00a0 I even picked up a walking stick to use to ward off future snake friends, should we cross paths.\u00a0 I was a little freaked out.\u00a0 To make matters worse &#8211; I quickly realized that I needed water. I had a large bottle in the car, and had figured that the 3 mile hike\/run wouldn&#8217;t require water on the trail.\u00a0 The 90 degrees quickly sapped by strength and the trail turned out to be 4.7 miles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/92039761\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-95\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/professorontherun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/untitled.jpg?resize=559%2C476&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"559\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/professorontherun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/untitled.jpg?w=803&amp;ssl=1 803w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/professorontherun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/untitled.jpg?resize=300%2C255&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I got back to the car I chugged the full 24 oz. bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Though hot, dehydrated and freaked out about snakes &#8211;
